A superb and rare matched pair of Louis XVI period fauteuils à la reine, dating to circa 1770. Expertly carved in beechwood and retaining traces of the original painted finish, each chair features an oval padded backrest within a molded frame, gracefully scrolling padded arms, and a serpentine seat above finely fluted, tapering legs adorned with carved rosettes.

What sets this pair apart is the hand-stitched needlepoint upholstery, worked in a refined blue and cream diamond motif. This rare survival of period needlework elevates the chairs beyond the ordinary, imbuing them with both historical authenticity and decorative richness.

Provenance & Significance:

Chairs of this quality and originality embody the elegant restraint of the Louis XVI neoclassical style, prized for its symmetry, balance, and refinement. Their combination of original painted surfaces and needlepoint upholstery makes them exceptionally scarce on the market.

Condition: Very good antique condition, with age-appropriate wear to the painted finish, enhancing the patina. Frames are stable and strong. Upholstery in remarkable preserved condition.

Dimensions:

Seat 23" x 21'D x 18"H

23"H Arm, 38.5"H overall
